THE BEAUTY BENEFITS OF DEEP BREATHING

In for four. Hold for four. Out for four. Repeat.

Deep belly breathing, or Diaphragmatic breathing, strengthens your diaphragm while lowering stress levels, reducing blood pressure, and regulating other important bodily processes.

Breathing exercises help you force out the air buildup in your lungs, increasing how much oxygen is in your blood. As practiced in yoga, deep breathing can be used as a technique to avoid injury as you gently ease into those more difficult poses.

The mind and body benefits of deep breathing are extensive as your breath plays an important role in all bodily functions, such as balancing hormones, lowering cortisol, lowering heart rate, and studies have shown that it can even alleviate the symptoms of IBS, but for this post, let's focus on the skin benefits.

THE SCIENCE BEHIND IT

As published in a report for Harvard's Medical School, shallow breathing limits the diaphragm's range of motion which means your average inhale may not be providing your blood vessels the necessary oxygen they truly need.

With shallow breathing, the lowest portion of the lungs, where many of those small blood vessels are located, does not receive its share of the oxygen. This can make you feel short of breath and even anxious.

Each deep breath is invigorating your cells and tissues and bringing much needed oxygen throughout the body and healing your skin from the inside out.

THE SKIN BENEFITS

Consistent deep breathing exercises will show an improvement in your overall skin appearance from the healthy regeneration of new cells. This directly impacts your skins overall "glow" while decreasing dullness, bumps, and redness.

Please keep in mind it can take 1-3 months of habitually oxygenating your blood to see these effects. If you forget, do not fret, you can do breath exercises anywhere, anytime.

Intentional breathing of in for four, hold for four, out for four while applying or removing your makeup, or following your typical skin care routine, is an easy way to add this healthful oxygen boost.
