OIL + ACNE PRONE SKIN 101

acne is the most common skin condition and can be anything from mild breakouts to painful and scarring cysts. Because every pore and hair follicle in your skin contains a sebaceous gland, every pore and hair follicle has the potential to be a pimple... what joy!

sebum is produced by the body to maintain tissue and hair softness, however, over production, dead skin cells, and bacteria on the skin can cause this natural skin oil to become clogged, allowing bacteria to grow into a pimple.

sebum is made of triglycerides, fatty acids, wax esters, squalene, cholesterol esters, and cholesterol - all common ingredients in moisturizing face products!

SALICYLIC ACID

salicylic acid is a naturally derived acid most commonly from willow bark. willow bark taken orally acts similar to an aspirin, helping arthritis, pain, headaches, and menstrual cramps. applied topically, salicylic acid is one of the most effective treatments for acne.

salicylic acid promotes skin exfoliation and empties pores of bacterial ridden sebum by loosening the debris physically causing the clog. because it is lipophillic, the acid can penetrate deep into the skin allowing the skin to calm due to its anti-inflammatory properties. ultimately, continued use of salicylic acid will result in decreased sebum production and better regulation (exfoliation) of skin cells.

FACE MASKING

Peter Thomas Roth Therapeutic Sulfur Mask

PTR's Face mask uses sulfur as a main ingredient as its function is similar to how salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide interacts with the skin. Sulfur is keratolytic, meaning it causes the skin to peel, which is a form of treatment therapy typically used to thin the skin around a lesion in which the skin formed extra layers due to damage - such as scar tissue that formed around cystic acne.

Aveeno Clear Complexion Pure Matte Peel Off Face Mask with Alpha Hydroxy Acids, Soy & Pomegranate

Aveeno's mask uses AHA's to treat inflammation, cell adhesion (when cells are damaged due to physical trauma such as popping a pimple, cells can adhere to one another preventing important cell function), and promotes exfoliation that can help with skin pigmentation.

prevention and maintenance is the best treatment for acne prone skin, however, don't be discouraged if it seems like your skin is "purging" or getting worse. it is common after introduction of exfoliating products to increase the rate of breakout, these symptoms can persist for up to a month.

**Consult a dermatologist if products are continuously not showing result or if your acne is effecting your mental health. ♥
