Facial masks are an important addition to your skin care routine and can provide an array of skin benefits. Depending on your skin type and concern, some masks can be used daily and some should be used less often, weekly or monthly
Facial masks come in mud, viscous, and sheet mask forms but for this post we are discussing mud and viscous masks only. The benefit of having the mud on skin for a period of time allows the product to absorb deeper into the pores as the product maintains the moisture balance on skin longer, i.e. it takes longer to dry on the skin.
Because our skin is the primary barrier to protect us from pollutants, toxins, infectious pathogens, and excessive fluids (think stepping into a puddle) from gaining access to our body, it is important to ensure your skin and hands and any tools used to apply the face mask are disinfected prior. According to a study published in 2017 in the Journal of Advanced Skin & Wound Care, moisture is essential to promote healing in the skin, creating an opening in the skin barrier allows the tissue to regenerate by allowing absorption of the nutrient into the cell. In the same way that creating an opening in the moisture barrier allows for entry of beneficial skin nutrients, being overly enthusiastic and allowing your skin to maintain moisture for too long can also ultimately cause cell damage and death, this is important to be mindful of when using viscous (gel) face masks and ensuring you do not allow your skin to stay hydrated too long.
The most common use of mud masks are for absorbing oils, impurities, and toxins from the skin. the mask should be left on the skin for up to 15 min - any longer can cause adverse effect of over drying the skin.
The most common use of viscous masks (gel) are for hydrating, cooling and repairing the skin. as the masks do not absorb oil the mask can be left on longer. Typically marketed as "night" masks, you are encouraged to leave the product on the skin for as long as possible, be mindful that your skins moisture barrier is not compromised in the process.

Aveeno's mask uses AHA's to treat inflammation, cell adhesion (when cells are damaged due to physical trauma such as popping a pimple, cells can adhere to one another preventing important cell function), and promotes exfoliation that can help with skin pigmentation.
PTR's Face mask uses sulfur as a main ingredient as its function is similar to how salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide interacts with the skin. Sulfur is keratolytic, meaning it causes the skin to peel, which is a form of treatment therapy typically used to thin the skin around a lesion in which the skin formed extra layers due to damage - such as scar tissue that formed around cystic acne,
